Weijia Jiang has reaction from the victim's small community.
Just hours after a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, an image of accused shooter Major Nidal Hissan emerged, putting a face to the horrifying scene. Two days later, pictures of the victims surfaced, shifting the focus to the personal.
Among the 13 people killed was Lt. Col. Juanita Warman of Havre de Grace, a 55-year-old mother of five and grandmother of eight. According to a statement from family members, Warman served in the Army as a certified psychiatric nurse practitioner specializing in treating post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
"You know, this hits home. I don't know how to react because it breaks my heart that this could happen here," said Vicky Heorge.
"Any time any of our people get hurt by our own people, it makes it even harder to swallow," said Mike Isola.
Lt. Col. Warman worked at the Perry Point VA Medical Center, which provides mental health care to Maryland veterans. Family members say she volunteered for deployment to Iraq because she was passionate about helping soldiers abroad, in addition to those at home.
The Warman family says she served 20 years in active duty and received many Army accolades. Neighbors call Warman "loving" and already sorely missed. They say she and her husband Philip moved their family to the Havre de Grace waterfront community three years ago from Pittsburgh, where she grew up and earned a master's degree in nursing.
