It was an early Thanksgiving for hundreds of families in Northwest Baltimore Wednesday.
Andrea Fujii joined the Empowerment Temple Church as they held a free open market to help needy families for the holiday and beyond.
The Empowerment Temple Church is on its way to feeding 1,500 families this holiday season.
"As much as they can carry, they can take," said Pastor Jamal Bryant, Empowerment Temple.
It's the third year the church's 10,000 member congregation has donated their time and money to families for Thanksgiving Day dinner and beyond.
They're helping make 12-year-old Breyuana Palmer's Thanksgiving meal complete.
"I'm just so grateful for places like this," Palmer said.
Anyone is welcome and the word is spreading.
The pastor says the people coming to get food are getting younger and younger and from all walks of life.
Wayne Jackson is just one of many out of work. He says all the holiday ingredients add up.
"Onions, potatoes and stuffing, that's half the meal," said Jackson.
Many say there's a silver lining to every dark cloud.
"All praise to God. It hasn't been that rough because people come through and do things like this for us and it makes things a little easier," said Jackson.
"Times are hard, but we still make it through sometimes and we're just thankful for places like this," said Palmer.
Organizers say this is why it's called "Thanksgiving" not "thanks receiving," They say it's important to make it not just a day, but a lifestyle.
The pastor of Empowerment Temple Church says they like to have people choose their own food at this event. He says it gives them a sense of pride, like they're shopping at a real grocery store.
