Residents Clean Up After Major Storm

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WJZ) ― People in Upper Marlboro are facing a difficult task after water flooded their homes and business.

Alex DeMetrick reports there still is some standing water and street closures.

The most impacted areas were businesses that sit between a levee and a flood controlled pond.

Residents saw water rise as high as five feet. Some say that's as high as it has been in 16 years. The flood saturated carpets, floors, merchandise and even files.

The water crested late Monday afternoon in Upper Marlboro after heavy rain swelled run-off, swamping the levee that runs through parts of town.

At least two bridges went under and a number of roads quickly became impassable. Now, much of the water has receded, but it left some debris behind.

But for the businesses, there is a race against time to clean up because anything that becomes saturated will have mold growing within 48 hours.
That does not leave much time to pull out all that saggy merchandise and get it out to dry before the mold sets in.
