City Prepares For Fourth Of July Fireworks Show

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

Baltimore City is getting ready to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, with one of the biggest fireworks shows in the nation.

Jessica Kartalija reports on the latest on this year's show, and why police are out in full force this holiday weekend.

This shell might fly, then the next one might be an eight, then come back here, the shells just jump all over the place in segments with the music.

Chief  Ray Loffredo is hard at work in Curtis Bay getting the fireworks show ready. Of course, traditional red, white and blue is required for the Fourth of July.

Tough financial times aren't slowing the show down. For the first time ever, a computer system will run the 18 minute display, featuring new shells, and more of them.

"We're going to have a great fireworks show at 9:30 p.m. in the Inner Harbor, it's off of two barges, and what's great this year is that we will have the Naval Academy Band Electric Brigade. They will perform live during the fireworks show," said Tracy Baskerville, Office of Promotion and the Arts.

Tracey Baskerville is with the Baltimore City's Office of Promotion and the Arts.

She says it's best to plan ahead for big crowds.

"The best way to get to the fireworks show and all the festivities down there is to take public transportation, MTA, Metro, bus or light rail. If you do need to drive, have a plan," said Baskerville.

With the Fourth of July falling on a Saturday, you can imagine a big crowd. Police expect a lot of people to be drinking and driving. Of course, they're going to be out in full force, making sure everyone stays safe.

Remember, not to drink and drive. Baltimore is offering Tipsy Taxi Service starting Friday at 8 p.m. They can be reached at 877-963-TAXI. The taxi service is free.

The fireworks can be seen from the Inner Harbor, Federal Hill, Fells Point and Canton.

The city has not said how much the show will cost city residents.
