A construction crew struck a gas line and electrical cable Friday afternoon in Eldersburg, causing a major fire.
Peggy Lee reports it happened around noon on Liberty Road and Monroe Ave.
Officials say crews were in the process of installing a sewer line when they hit a gas main line and an electrical cable.
Store-N-Lock sits across the street from the site of the fire. Jeff Remmel got a shock coming to work, but he said fire crews worked diligently to bring it down.
"When I got here flames were shooting pretty high. I guess probably 20 to 30 feet high. Gradually, though, it started getting smaller. I guess they found the main valve and started turning it down," he said.
As a precaution, two nearby homes were evacuated. No one was hurt, but some shoppers were inconvenienced since the electrical cable feeds a Food Lion, knocking it into the dark.
Once BGE crews are able to secure that main, the fire department says they will reopen the area to the public.
