An Anne Arundel County man was killed in an early morning fire.
Sally Thorner reports firefighters were called to the 1100-block of Mace Road around 1 a.m. Monday.
A neighbor near the home in the Bay Ridge community saw smoke and flames and called for help.
When firefighters arrived they found the Cape Cod-style home engulfed in flames. They immediately called a second-alarm and started knocking out the flames.
That's when they found a man inside.
He was later identified as Kendall Brown, 42. Investigators have determined the cause of the fire to be accidental. They say there were no functioning smoke alarms in the house at the time of the fire.
"This incident is an all-too-tragic reminder of the dangers of fire in our community. I extend our deepest sympathies to the family and ask all of our residents to ensure their safety by checking their smoke alarms, and if necessary installing one in their home. The power to avert this type of tragedy is assuredly within our control," County Executive John R. Leopold said in learning of the incident. The exact origin remains under investigation. Damage estimates have been set at $200,000.
A total of 63 firefighters worked to bring the fire under control.
Any resident unable to afford a smoke alarm can contact the Anne Arundel County Fire Department Office of Injury Prevention at 410-222-8303 to schedule an installation free-of-charge.
This incident brings to three the number of people killed in fires in Anne Arundel County this year. In 2007, five civilians lost their lives as a result of fire.
