16 Families Displaced After Apartment Fire
SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) ―
Montgomery County fire officials say a fire at a Silver Spring apartment complex has displaced 16 families.
Firefighters from Montgomery and Prince George's counties were called to the Fairland Gardens apartment building on Treetop Drive near Route 29 about 7:45 a.m. Thursday.
Montgomery County fire spokesman Pete Piringer says firefighters rescued a man trapped on a balcony, but other residents escaped the fire after hearing the alarm. He says a firefighter injured his knee after the floor on one level gave way.
Piringer says the fire was caused by an electrical outlet that malfunctioned in a bedroom on the second floor of the four-story building.
Officials say damage to the building is estimated at $500,000.
