Car Crashes Into Home, Sparks Major Fire
PIKESVILLE, Md. (WJZ) ―
One day after an SUV came crashing through a home, a man and his son say they are lucky to be alive.
The bizarre accident started a fire in his house and had people inside rushing for cover.
Mike Schuh reports on why one family is counting their blessings.
A runaway SUV went over a tree, through two fences and into a storage shed. At that point, it was burning and headed toward Alfonso Richardson's house.
"His car was on fire and when it struck the house, there was an explosion," said Alfonso's son, Gerald Richardson. "I'm just happy my dad was able to get out because he was in the room where the car hit."
Richardson will tell you he is a very sound sleeper--he didn't hear a thing.
Neighbors and a passing policeman ran to the house.
Richardson doesn't want to talk about it. He just says he thanks God he's alive.
Police can't say why the driver of the SUV ran off the road, but he fled and didn't try to wake anyone inside. He was caught and charged by police a half hour later.
Much of the Richardsons' home and belongings are damaged.
Baltimore County police won't release the name of the man driving the SUV involved in the crash and fire.
