2 Jessup Inmates Stabbed In Fight

JESSUP, Md. (AP) ―

Two inmates, including a convicted double murderer, are being treated at Shock Trauma after they were stabbed during a fight at the maximum-security Jessup Correctional Institution.

State corrections officials are investigating the incident, which happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday in the common area of a housing unit as inmates were on their way to an outside recreation yard.

Officials say it's possible that other inmates were involved. No prison staff were injured. The two with stab wounds were taken by ambulance to Shock Trauma, where they were in serious condition Tuesday afternoon.

One of the inmates was convicted in 1997 of two counts of first-degree murder and is serving a life sentence. The other is serving seven years for dealing drugs.

Investigators are looking into whether gangs were involved in the fight. The housing unit where the fight occurred, which houses 348 inmates, has been locked down.
