Woman Fatally Shot By Ex-Girlfriend

NORTH EAST, Md. (AP) ―

State police have say a Joppatowne woman has been charged with shooting her former girlfriend to death in the doorway of her Cecil County home.

Police say 46-year-old Sandra Heim and 47-year-old Helen Sparks had recently broken up and an argument occurred before the shooting.

The women were driving away from Sparks' home in North East around 1 p.m. Saturday, when the car stopped. Witnesses told police that Sparks began walking home, but Heim got a gun from her trunk and started firing, pursuing Sparks to her doorstep.

Police say Sparks' 22-year-old son captured Heim and neighbors helped hold her until police arrived.

Heim is charged with first- and second-degree murder, assault and handgun violations in Sparks' death.
