Farmland Along The Nanticoke Used For Conservation
VIENNA, Md. (AP) ―
The Maryland Board of Public Works has approved a planned conservation area along the Nanticoke River in Vienna.
The board on Wednesday voted to use $4.6 million in Project Open Space funds to buy 275 acres of farmland. The conservation area will protect wetlands, endangered species and the Mill Creek Natural Heritage Area.
Vienna Mayor Russell Brinsfield says the move creates a permanent growth boundary south and west of town.
State officials say the purchase is one of the first under the new Land Conservation Targeting system. The system was developed last year to protect the state's most strategically important landscapes.
