Historic Buildings Pose As Security Risk

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) ―

Federal officials are being stymied in their attempt to demolish a vacant farmhouse and nearby buildings on property near the newly extended runway at Hagerstown Regional Airport.

Federal regulators and the U.S. Secret Service say the buildings are a threat to airport security, but the property has been designated a historic place by the Maryland Historical Trust.

Preservationists say the law requires that the government exhaust all other options before tearing down the buildings.

Options for saving the buildings could include moving them, finding someone to occupy them or using them for a museum. But a survey conducted for the airport says it could cost rehabilitating the farmhouse could cost $350,000.
