Local Produce Getting Md. Attention

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ―

Maryland officials and environmentalists want you to eat more from farmers near you -- and they're setting aside money to encourage you.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation and other environmental groups have announced $425,500 in grants to promote Maryland agriculture.

Local food products such as grass-fed beef or Maryland fruit helps the environment because locally grown food reduces energy costs to get meat and produce to grocers' shelves.

State lawmakers are looking at the eat-local movement, too. The Maryland Senate is considering a bill to require state schools to set aside a week in their cafeterias for Maryland food products.

The bill would also encourage schools to schedule field trips to local farms so students have a better sense where their food comes from. That bill awaits final consideration in the Senate, with a similar bill in the House up for debate today in a committee.
