Four environmental groups have endorsed Democrat Frank Kratovil in the First District congressional race.
Kratovil is running against Republican state Senator Andy Harris for the seat currently occupied by Republican Wayne Gilchrest, a noted environmentalist. Harris defeated Gilchrest in a primary, and the congressman recently crossed party lines to endorse Kratovil.
Brad Heavner, the state director of Environment Maryland, says Harris "is consistently anti-solar power, anti-energy efficiency and pro-dirty power." Also endorsing Kratovil on Monday were the League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club and Clean Water Action.
Harris' campaign says the senator supports tax credits for alternative energy and favors opening new areas to oil and gas exploration.
The First District includes the entire Eastern Shore and parts of four other counties.
