Children found out more about nature with a visit to Patapsco Valley State Park Friday.
Sometimes there's just no substitute for wet feet. School kids more familiar with concrete and city streets found that out Friday.
As
Alex DeMetrick reports, it's part of a growing movement to get Maryland children into the great outdoors.
Sawmill Creek runs from Catonsville into the Patapsco River. Despite the slippery footing, it provided students from Franklin Square Elementary School with a first-time experience.
"It's very naturey," said student Zhane Howard.
Naturey it is with kids turning rocks, looking for the small signs of life that indicate a stream's health and sharing it with the governor.
Governor Martin O'Malley joined elementary school students by wading into the creek and taking water samples for testing.
"Because when you don't take care of your streams, it goes into the Chesapeake Bay, washing down that polluted stuff," said Howard.
O'Malley is promoting a new state push to get children involved in outdoor activities. Maryland is trying to expose more young children to the outdoors. This summer, 200 older at-risk kids will be placed in state park jobs.
Earlier this week, the Maryland Partnership for Children in Nature was established to expose as many kids as possible to Maryland's outdoors.
