D.C. Eases Rental Rules For Inauguration

WASHINGTON (AP) ― The District of Columbia is making it easier for people who want to rent out their homes during the inauguration.

Mayor Adrian Fenty says it's important to help people find ways to witness the swearing-in of President-elect Barack Obama.

Hotel rooms in the District -- and as far away as West Virginia -- are booked solid around Inauguration Day, leading residents to start renting out space in their homes or apartments.

Fenty has decided not to stand in the way of the process. He issued an executive order Thursday that temporarily suspends enforcement of the District's licensing requirements for short-term rentals of residential property.

People will be allowed to rent out their homes without a license from Jan. 13 through Jan. 27. Inauguration Day is Jan. 20.
