Baltimore Police Search For Drunk Drivers

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― The three-day holiday weekend, while fun, can be dangerous, as drinking and driving have deadly consequences.  Jessica Kartalija reports police are out in force, making sure you get home safely.

The countdown is on to what's touted as one of the biggest fireworks shows in the nation and city police are making sure everyone stays safe.

"We have 480 closed circuit TV cameras that will be monitored.  We have foxtrot helicopters that will be out, our boat unit will be out, motors, horses and an extremely high number of uniformed and undercover officers will be patrolling the area," aid Anthony Guglielmi, Baltimore City Police.

The increased police presence is a precaution.  With weekend celebrations comes deadly consequences, as the holiday is known as one of the most dangerous for drinking and driving; 44% of all deaths on the 4th of July, Labor Day and New Year's Eve are alcohol related.  Memorial Day, Christmas and Thanksgiving have slightly less deaths directly related to drinking.

City officials say if you choose to drink Saturday night, be sure to have a designated driver or call a cab.  There will be an additional 100 taxis on city streets.

"We are the largest taxi company in Baltimore City and we feel an obligation to do our part to keep our city safe," said Dwight Kines, general manager for Yellow Cab.

Yellow Cab is picking up the tab and will take passengers to locations up to 50 miles away.  If you need help getting home, police officers will be on hand to help you get a cab.

"We're just going to be monitoring to make sure everyone is safe and gets into the city okay and out of the city okay and that there are no incidents," Guglielmi said.

The number for Tipsy Taxi is 877-963-TAXI.  The service is free.
