72-Year-Old Man Drowns At Park

OAKLAND, Md. (AP) ―

Maryland Natural Resources Police say a 72-year-old Hempstead, N.Y., man drowned while swimming at Swallow Falls State Park in far western Maryland.

Capt. Bob Davis says Claude Simpson went swimming in the Youghiogheny River at the foot of Swallow Falls while attending a family reunion at the park in Garrett County.

Davis says Simpson was pulled under the turbulent water shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday and witnesses were unable to rescue him. The body was recovered downstream about an hour later by divers from the Deep Creek Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

Davis says signs in the area warn that it is dangerous to swim in the river, which was swollen by recent heavy rains.
