Drifter Dies After Encounters With Police

RIDGELY, Md. (AP) ―

Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a drifter who died after a series of encounters with police.

State police say 43-year-old Raymond Bartles, whose last address was in Woodbridge, Va., was arrested by troopers Wednesday morning on a trespassing charge in Centreville. Police say troopers attempted to find a homeless shelter for him, but were unable to do so.

About 30 minutes after a court commissioner released Bartles, a Natural Resources Police corporal saw Bartles south of Centreville walking along a highway and posing a traffic hazard. Bartles said he was walking to Easton, and a trooper drove him to the Caroline County line. A short time later, the same corporal saw Bartles acting strangely along Route 312, north of Ridgely.

Police say Bartles ran at the corporal, tried to enter his patrol car, then laid down on the ground on his own. When officers tried to help Bartles off the ground, police say his body went limp. He was pronounced dead at Easton Memorial Hospital.

The medical examiner is conducting an autopsy.
