Family Supports Teen Accused In Mom's Death

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ/AP) ―

The lawyer for a teenager accused in the bludgeoning death of his mother says the boy still has the support of his family.

Shanell Kathleen Harleston is representing Lewin Powell III, who's been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his mother, Donna Campbell-Powell.

Police say the 16-year-old beat his mother to death with a baseball bat in their Towson home last week after an argument over his grades.

Powell is also charged with attempted murder for an attack on his father.

Harleston says she will seek physical and psychological evaluations of her client to figure out what went wrong.

She notes that Powell got good grades in tough classes at the private McDonogh School and had never been in trouble before.

She says Powell "is a wonderful boy who continues to have the love and support of his entire family."

The family released this statement.

"While this tragedy has come as a complete shock to the Campbell-Powell family, they continue to support Lewin and feel that something is terribly wrong. Those who know Lewin well consistently describe him as incredibly brilliant and always happy."
