Ways To Help Your Pet Fight The Dog Days Of Summer

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― If you're a dog owner, you know the summer heat can be tough on your pet.  So what can you do to keep your best friend cool?

Ron Matz has more on some of the new ways to beat the heat in the dog days of summer.

On a hot day at the Canton Dog Park, Momma's found a place to chill.

"Basically she does it herself.  She'll stay in the shade, have a drink of water. She's big on ice cubes to stay cool and she lets me know when it's time to go home," said owner John Warner.

Molly is wearing a cooling vest because the heat can take its toll.

"They make a vest for dogs.  You put it in the water, ring it out, put it on the dog and it brings down their body temperature," said Virginia Byrnes, owner of Dogma.

At Dogma in Canton, you'll find all kinds of cool stuff for your best friend.

"Summer is for fun.  Just like for kids, you need to keep your dogs cool and hydrated and let them have fun," said Byrnes.

If your pet needs a cooling treat, how about frozen yogurt for dogs?  There are also yummy smoothies.

Experts also say a life vest for your dog is an important item to have, especially if you have a pool or a boat.
