Development Project For E. Baltimore In The Works

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Another development project slated for East Baltimore is in the works.

Jessica Kartalija
reports Ed Hale's plan for Canton Crossing will bring high-end shops and restaurants to the area.

If all goes as planned, First Mariner Bank CEO Ed Hale will turn a stretch of waterfront property into a Main Street-style shopping center.

"It's going to be wild," Hale said.  "Really interesting."

Hale Properties wants to build a 570,000 square foot center with upscale restaurants and stores.  The development will be on the water, just blocks from Canton Square.

"When I first started this, I thought I would build office campuses, so I figured office buildings.  I thought downtown businesses and now it's going to be shopping," he said.

Hale tells Eyewitness News the first phase, including all of those shops and restaurants could be completed in the next two years and that has Canton residents and realtors thrilled.

"I like being around a lot of stuff, very convenient.  The more, the merrier.  There's always a new restaurant to try and I'm excited about it.  I love it," said Jason Timoll.

Other residents, like Hale himself, agree.  He says he decided to build the retail space after hearing residents say they need more places to shop.

Realtors say it means good news for the housing market.

"Any time new things come to this area, such as this and in this magnitude, like what Mr. Hale has done in the past, what he's built...he has a vision of the city, its increased value," said realtor John Murrow.

Hale also says when the housing market does improve, he plans to build three residential towers in the area.

Target and Harris Teeter are just two of the stores planning to move into Canton Crossing.
