Proud mother Debbie Phelps and Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith helped paint a golden eight for Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps.
Olympic sensation Michael Phelps and his eight gold medals are being honored in the heart of Baltimore County.
Eight is big in Baltimore County. A golden eight for Baltimore County's Olympic great Michael Phelps, an orange eight for Cal Ripken. It's the kickoff of a golden week in Maryland.
That's what Debbie Phelps, proud mother of Michael Phelps, and County Executive Jim Smith helped paint in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue in the heart of Towson.
"Not only is Michael a great competitor, he showed the world that he is also a well-grounded human being," said Smith.
Debbie Phelps, who besides being Michael's mom, is also principal at Windsor Mill Middle School.
"I'm just so proud of Michael because he has become such a wonderful role model to so many kids. What is really unique is that some of my students have come up to me using Michael as an example to tell me how they, too, are going to work hard to achieve their goals," said Debbie.
Maryland's Olympic celebration will take place in Ft. McHenry Saturday evening.
The show will include fireworks, highlights of the afternoon parade and special tributes.
