Baltimore Police Find Newborn's Body In Trash Bin

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

Baltimore police officers found a full-term baby boy dead in a dumpster this weekend.

Sally Thorner reports they're now trying to figure out how it died and if the mother should be charged.

Officers were led to the dumpster to look for a newborn baby.

They knew the 22-year-old mother lived in the basement of St. John's United Methodist Church in its shelter.

The woman had checked herself into Union Memorial complaining of abdominal pain.

Doctors figured out she had recently given birth.

Police were called, and that's when they found a full-term boy in the trash.

"It's really surprising. I've always felt very safe in this neighborhood. It's shocking," said neighbor Anna Clauson.

Neighbors say this community often reaches out to help people in need.

"I never knew that there were things like this going on in our community 'cause it's really more like overprotective and helping each other out here in Charles Village," said neighbor Terri Revlon.

No one at the church would comment on what services the young mom was getting at the church or how long she'd been staying in a shelter.

Many people say they wish someone had been there to help her.

"Hopefully she'll get some help, and everything will be OK. It's definitely some sad news, definitely sad," said neighbor Bernard Matthews.

The woman has not been charged. The Medical Examiner's office is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the baby's death.
