Teen Accused In Beating Death Faces Judge
CROFTON, Md. (WJZ) ―
The crime sent shockwaves through a quiet Anne Arundel County community. A 14-year-old beaten so severely he died. Wednesday, his family was in court as one of the accused killers faced a judge.
Mike Hellgren has more on what happened.
The attack in the quiet Crofton neighborhood lasted five minutes, but it shattered the lives of two teenagers forever.
Chris Jones, 14, died after he was beaten while trying to ride his bike home. A 16-year-old, Javel George, threw the punch that killed him and the judge allowed adult charges against him to stand.
"I saw no remorse," said Susan, a family friend.
"I don't know if remorse is the word. I think he's very regretful to know that a friend of his is dead," said George's lawyer, Kevin McCants.
Police say George was a member of the East Side Diamonds and confronted Jones because his friends associated with a rival gang.
George faces 25 years in prison. He's been in prison since the arrest.
"He's become a little bit unraveled. He's being taunted by other inmates, adult inmates," McCants said.
The medical examiner said a punch to his head hit a vulnerable spot, tearing the artery that supplies blood to his brain.
McCants says he plans to ask for his client's charges to be brought down to the juvenile level.
Another teenager has also been charged in this case. He's 14 and faces juvenile charges.
A Memorial Fundraiser Bull Roast for Christopher Jones is planned for Sunday, June 28th from 1-5 p.m. at the Cancun Cantina. There will also be speakers on violence at the event. For more information, email chrisjonesbullroast@comcast.net.
