Cab Company Installs Credit-Card Devices
KENSINGTON, Md. (AP) ―
Some taxis in the Washington area now accept credit cards.
Barwood Taxi of Kensington has installed the first touch-screen self-payment video devices in the region. The company has put the devices in 200 cabs. It plans to have the six-inch color-screen devices in all 435 of its taxis by the end of the year.
Similar machines, which display public service announcements and ads in addition to accepting payment, debuted in New York City two years ago. Since then, taxi companies in eight other cities have installed similar devices.
Alfred LaGasse, chief executive of the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association, says he hopes the credit card systems will deter would-be robbers by decreasing the amount of cash drivers carry.
