A tractor trailer slammed into the back of the minivan Maria Lizana-Sanchez and her husband were riding in, causing a chain reaction crash that killed her and her child.
Maria Lizana-Sanchez, 31, and her baby were killed Friday in a crash on southbound I-97 in Anne Arundel County.
Sanchez was seven months pregnant when a tractor trailer slammed in the rear of the Dodge Caravan she was riding in with her husband along southbound I-97 in Anne Arundel County.
"That's just really hard that you could even imagine that you could leave home and don't even come back," said Mary Long.
Long lives in the same Glen Burnie apartment complex where Sanchez lived with her husband.
She says the neighborhood is devastated by the two lives lost. They feel for the victim's husband who survived the crash.
"It's just so sad to know that what he, his heart will grieve. He's going to grieve for a long time. He's going to need the support of other people to support him and help him get through this," said Long.
Anne Arundel County police stopped traffic on the highway Friday afternoon to allow for a funeral procession.
More than 45 cars had come to a complete stop when investigators say, for some reason, a tractor trailer failed to stop and slammed in the back of Sanchez's minivan and several other vehicles, causing a chain reaction crash.
Six other people, including Sanchez's husband, had to be hospitalized for their injuries.
State police have identified the driver of the tractor trailer as 34-year-old Lamoyan Lee of Essex. Police have not yet filed charges against him, but their investigation is ongoing.
Anne Arundel County Police say they've assisted with at least 150 funeral processions in the last year.
