A multi-vehicle crash Friday evening in Harford County turns into a tragedy during the busy rush hour.
Weijia Jiang reports just after 5 p.m. state police say a man lost control of his SUV and crashed head-on into a minivan on the Bel Air Bypass. Inside that minivan was a family of four.
A Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter arrived with a doctor to assist in removing patients in the entrapped minivan.
After hours of maneuvering, crews were able to cut those patients out of their minivan. State police confirmed the Brady family of Perry Hall was trapped inside.
The deceased victims are identified as Katherine S. Brady, 31, and Wilson Brady, 8. Katherine was the front seat passenger. Wilson was one of two children seated in the rear of the vehicle. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the minivan was Stephen Brady, 32, and the second child involved was Ian Brady, 2.
Lisa Houck, a neighbor of the family, is devastated.
"In the morning, when I'm driving my daughter to school, I always see her in the van, and the kids are always coming out with bookbags on their backs," said Houck.
Charges are pending against the Jeep Cherokee's driver, Christopher Lentz, 37. Lentz was driving when he swerved into oncoming traffic and struck the minivan head-on. The minivan then spun out of control, causing a subsequent crash with a 2004 Ford van, which was traveling behind the Brady family.
"At this point, troopers are not sure why he crossed the center line and struck the minivan head-on. It's all part of the investigation," said Elena Russo with Maryland State Police.
Bryan Kearchner was the van's driver. He was transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
"You just see all that traffic coming straight for you, and even though I'm across that other line when people come straight up, it looks like as I could be hit, and there are quite a few accidents there," said Houck.
Stephen Brady and Lentz shared a state police Medevac helicopter to Shock Trauma. Stephen is said to be recovering while Lentz is in fair condition.
Eyewitness News learned Saturday that Ian Brady, the other child involved in the crash, has been treated and released from Johns Hopkins Hospital.
"Unfortunately state police deal with these types of accidents more frequently than they want to. At this point we're doing everything we can to figure out the cause of the accident," said Russo.
