Capistrano has swallows to mark the return of spring. Maryland has crabs, and the first of the new season are coming in.
As Alex DeMetrick reports, hope is riding with them.
In the gloom of a cold rain, a bright spot has popped up in the Essex area of Baltimore County.
At Lowers Crab Shack and Fish Market, the first Maryland crabs are in.
Jesse Lowers and his partner Chris Phelps caught six bushels Monday. Even though the season opened April 1, crabs are just beginning to stir in the bay. "Just starting to come out of the mud. Water temperature is about 52 degrees. Another couple of degrees, they'll be coming out pretty good," said Lowers.
Coming out here first, in Maryland's southern most waters. It's a long drive to their boat from Essex, but from Smith Island north toward Calvert County, is Maryland's spring crabbing grounds.
They also fetch some of the best money. Dockside, a bushel of number one crabs is bringing $135. At the retail end, the biggest go for $85 a dozen.
But the cost of doing business is also high. To keep the crab population from crashing, watermen worked a shorter season last year and will again this year.
