Dorchester Council Objects To Crab Limits

CAMBRIDGE, Md. (AP) ―

The Dorchester County Council has sent a letter to Gov. Martin O'Malley objecting to the state's proposed limits on the harvest of female blue crabs.

The letter dated May 13 warns of dire consequences for the state's crabbing industry. The letter says the regulations would force most crab processing plants in Dorchester County to close.

Most of the state's crab houses are in the county.

The council has also requested a meeting with O'Malley to discuss the issue.

County manager Jane Baynard says figures from the Department of Economic Development show an economic impact to the county of more than $21 million. The data predicts the loss of 600 jobs.

The proposed regulations call for closing the commercial harvest of female crabs on Oct. 23.
