MDTA Officer's Family Speaks About His Death

BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) ― Maryland Transportation Authority Police Officer Courtney Brooks has been posthumously promoted to corporal.

Corporal Brooks was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver New Year's Eve while he was directing trucks around Baltimore's Inner Harbor celebration.

"It doesn't even seem real that he won't be here any longer, that we can't talk with him.  He's going to be missed a lot," Brooks' 17-year-old daughter Casey told Richard Sher.

Corporal Brooks, his family said, had a great sense of humor.  "Just being around him made you smile."

Police have arrested the woman who owns the SUV that killed Corporal Brooks, but she has not been charged in the officer's death.

Casey says her father would want to be remembered as "a cop just doing his job."

The funeral will be held Monday at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in North Baltimore.

A viewing is planned this weekend at the Vaughn C. Greene Funeral Home in Randallstown.
