A Dulaney High School senior has died after being hit by a car on his way home from school. The accident happened Friday afternoon. The boy died Sunday at Shock Trauma.
Kelly McPherson spoke with the student's parents, sister and friends.
"I just screamed `Oh my God.' It's like my heart just struck me," said Marilu Penaflor.
The mother of a high school senior didn't know her son was dying on the street as she drove past a car accident.
"I was still looking and I didn't even know it was my own son laying there," she said.
Conrad "CJ" Utanes, 17, was killed when a fellow Dulaney High School student hit him with her car.
CJ was walking across Girdwood Avenue right behind the high school, like he had done every school day for the last four years. He was hit just feet away from his home.
"In a split of a second, somebody snapped my child," she said.
He loved music, the Beatles and, according to his friends and family, his trademark long hair.
"One day I asked him, why do you grow out your hair? And he said, 'cause in the Army, I'm going to have to take all of this off," said friend Antonio Yanes.
That was his dream, and he had recently enlisted in the Army.
"He's a soldier in heaven because he fulfilled his dream," said Angel Utanes, CJ's sister.
"CJ is, he's very reserved. He only says a few words but when he says a few words, it has a substance on it," said his father, Conrad Utanes Sr.
"He always hugs me and he always tells me, `Mom, don't worry about it. I'll take care of you,'" Penaflor said.
Instead, the family is taking care of his funeral. Police say this was an accidental death. The driver will not be charged.
