2 Rescued After House Collapse In Chesapeake Beach

CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. (WJZ) ― A man and a woman were injured when high winds caused a house to collapse into a second home late Sunday night in Chesapeake Beach.

Alex DeMetrick
reports the high winds have given away to high water, but not without destroying two homes first.

Two new homes were destroyed, when a four story house under construction blew apart and smashed the home next door.

"The wind was blowing off of the bay, probably 50 or 60 miles an hour. We heard a loud noise and thought it was perhaps a water spout or a tornado or something," said resident Michael Hall.

When Hall realized the couple who lived in the flattened home was still inside, he got on his cell phone.

"We got him on the phone, and we said 'Frank, how are you doing?' He said 'I am in a lot of pain and I can't move.' I said 'well, the house next door to you that's under construction, collapsed on top of your house.'  So, he said 'well, they got my wife out, I don't think they can get me out.' We just stayed on the phone and encouraged him that rescue people were on the way and that they would get him out," said Hall.

The couple was eventually rescued.  The man and woman are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Meanwhile much of Chesapeake Beach is without power and parts of nearby North Beach have been sealed off by rising water.

It's not just the rain, but high tides are also playing a part, pushing bay waters in, as rain tries to flow out.
