If you think it's been cold on land, try it on water. Ice is getting a grip on Maryland waterways.
As
Alex DeMetrick reports, that ice now needs breaking.
From a distance, the Kent Narrows in Queen Anne's County is picture perfect. That's until you get close.
Ice a couple of inches thick has formed in the last few days, and to keep marinas and channels open, it has to be cleared.
"We try to stay pro-active with ice. If it builds up, it just gets harder and harder to break through," said first mate Jason Spadaro.
Even Maryland's 100-ton ice breaker has to work to keep up as more of the bay's waterways freeze. If ice gets thick, boats can pay a heavy price.
Some of the thickest ice is in the far northern part of the bay. There shipping channels are monitored and kept open by the Coast Guard.
Even with the freezing temperatures, there is enough wind to keep water moving. It's when the wind dies down that the ice thickens up.
