Starbucks Set To Close A Dozen Md. Stores

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

Starbucks is grinding 600 of its U.S. stores out of its inventory.

Richard Sher reports 12 of them are in Maryland.

The popular coffee giant opened its first store in Seattle, Wash. back in 1971.

At one point, there were more than 15,000 Starbucks in 44 countries. That number has been cut significantly.

Three local Starbucks heading for the exit are located in the Centre Court Shopping Center, Pikesville, in the Light Street Pavilion at Harborplace and at Belvedere Square.

"It's disappointing because I really like this Pikesville location, but there's one up the street and another down the street, so it's going to be OK," said Sara Greenberg.

Kate Spath, another Starbucks fan, enjoys her coffee at Belvedere Square.

"I live in Bel Air. There are Starbucks up there where I'll be going," said Spath.

Starbucks shut down all of its U.S. stores for several hours back in February to retrain staff, but the competition has been fierce from Dunkin Donuts, McDonald's, Royal Farms, 7-11 and others.

The 600 stores will begin closing this month through February.

The company says it plans to place workers at other stores if it's possible.
