Coast Guard Yard Renovates America's Tall Ship

CURTIS BAY, Md. (AP) ― Known to some as "America's Tall Ship," the Coast Guard ship Eagle is currently in dry dock at the Coast Guard Yard in Curtis Bay for the first time since 2002.

The 295-foot ship arrived in September and is undergoing renovations expected to continue until at least mid-January.

The bulk of the work involves removing rusted metal and stripping away some remaining patches of lead paint.

The Eagle sails into the yard nearly every fall for some work, but a dry docking happens about once every five years.

The Eagle was built for the German Navy in 1936 and was seized by the U.S. after World War II.
