New Underground Coal Mine Eyed In Western Md.

FROSTBURG, Md. (AP) ― Public officials in western Maryland are talking about prospects for a new underground coal mine and associated power plant in Garrett County.

State Delegate Wendell Beitzel says the Casselman Basin Clean Coal Project will be the subject of a meeting next Tuesday in Frostburg.

The Casselman Basin is drained by the Casselman River, a well-known trout stream. It is a region roughly 18 miles long and five miles wide that extends from Deep Creek Lake to the state line near Grantsville.

The area is believed to contain the largest single coal reserve left in Maryland and natural gas reserves trapped in the Marcellus shale bed.
