Baltimore Residents Recycling 20% More

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Baltimore City is recycling more than ever before.

Waste management officials say the amount of trash moving through its recycling facility has climbed since the beginning of the year.  Tim Williams has more on local efforts.

Pound after pound, ton upon ton of trash ride alone conveyer belts.  Since the beginning of 2008, Baltimore's Waste Management Recycle America facility has sorted more than 6,900 tons of trash, a 20% increase from 5,800 tons in 2007.

"We think we're getting a lot more response because it's just simpler for people to recycle everything on one day," said Cleaner Greener Baltimore Director Celeste Amato.

This year, the city launched single stream recycling.  All the recyclable items at your home are collected in yellow bins and then carried away.

"It simplified the schedule.  It simplified collections so we're hopefully making less errors and you can put it all in one bin in one day.  What could be easier than that?"  Amato said.

"If you have your routine that you know this goes out in that can and this goes out in that can, it's a little bit like sorting laundry.  You don't put everything in the same load," said Bonnie Wells.

Waste managers say the increase in recycling comes from conscientious and color-minded individuals.  Residents know that using the yellow means going green.  A cleaner, greener city is the goal.

Recycle bins are available upon request by dialing the city's non-emergency help line at 311.  The bins are $12 for a large bin and $5 for a small one.
