Representative Roscoe Bartlett has co-sponsored a bill that would end invasive research and testing on chimpanzees.
Representative Roscoe Bartlett has co-sponsored a bill that would end invasive research and testing on chimpanzees.
The Maryland Republican is among eight lawmakers from both parties who have introduced the Great Ape Protection Act.
The measure would end invasive research on an estimated 1,200 chimpanzees in U.S. labs.
It also would retire about 600 federally owned chimps to permanent sanctuary.
Bartlett's office told the Cumberland Times-News that he once directed research on chimps at Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Lab.
The 6th District congressman now says it's time to limit such research. Six other countries have banned or limited the use of chimps in laboratory research.
