Maryland Targets Childhood Hunger

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Maryland has a new enemy in its sights: childhood hunger.  The state has set a goal to end it.

Pat Warren
has more on how it plans to do it.

In a world where children are constantly reminded to use their indoor voices, it's hard to think of them as voiceless.  When it comes to their general welfare, however, too many children are seen and not heard.

The state of Maryland has turned an ear to childhood hunger.  Governor O'Malley announced a partnership with the national "Share Our Strength" organization to end childhood hunger in Maryland in five years.

"If there's ever a state that has it within its grasp to eradicate childhood hunger, it is our state.  There is no more urgent time to do it than now," Governor O'Malley said.

Most children in Maryland have the benefits of good food but there are an estimated 184,000 who are not as fortunate.

"The average working person that makes $10 an hour could be eligible for the supplemental food programs like food stamps.  People need to know that," said Ameejill Whitlock.

The Partnership to End Childhood Hunger will help reach more children by increasing their participation in under-utilized food and nutrition programs.
