New Bill May Change Child Booster Seat Requirement

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) ―

There was no opposition to a bill introduced in Annapolis Tuesday that would raise the requirement for child booster seats from six to eight.

It would add two years to the existing legislation introduced and passed in the 2002 session by Montgomery County Democratic Delegate Bill Bronrott.

"With new data, it seems clear the old law requiring the booster seats through age five needs to be revised," he told Richard Sher.

Christine Guarino and her six-year-old daughter Lauren testified for the bill. Back in 1999, Christine was told the car seats being used for her then-three- and five-year-old sons were unsafe. She immediately went out and purchased booster seats.

"The very next day, we were broadsided by a Mack truck. I'm sure the new booster seats saved my sons," she said.

"We're talking about the number one killer of young children, car crashes," Delegate Bronrott said.
