Fire Dept. Recognized For Commitment To Military
MILLERSVILLE, Md. (WJZ) ―
Chief David L. Stokes has been awarded the 2008 Pro Patria award by the Maryland chapter of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. This is the highest state level award bestowed by the Department of Defense and is presented to those employers who demonstrate exceptional support for national defense by adopting personnel policies that make it easier for employees to participate in the National Guard and Reserve.
Chief Stokes was selected from among 45 applicants whose names were submitted to the State office of the ESGR.
In addition, the International Association of Firefighters Local #1563 (Anne Arundel County) has been recognized with a State Chair Seven Seals Award for their support of military families while members are serving in the guard and reserve. This award recognizes the significant organizational achievement, initiative and support that promotes the ESRG mission.
Under Chief Stokes' leadership, the Fire Department formed a joint management-labor coalition to provide support for the families of career firefighters serving on active military duty. Formed in 2007, members of the department have maintained contact, provided support, and donated supplies, materials and time to ensure that the needs of military families are met. The department has had as many as 10 members on active deployment. Several have recently returned from active duty including Matthew Miller, a bronze star recipient, and George Ferguson whose family was assisted by members of the support group highlighted by the media in November 2007.
"I am extremely proud of Chief Stokes and the leadership of the union in forging the partnership that resulted in this award. Our brave men and women serving in the armed forces should never have to worry about their families as they protect our freedom at home and abroad. Because of their sacrifices, and those of their families, we will continue to provide the best support and assistance where ever we can. This award reflects the entire philosophy of Anne Arundel County government in supporting its employees and our men and women in uniform," County Executive John R. Leopold said.
Chief Stokes was surprised to learn of the award but not the commitment of the members of the department.
"We are a tremendously close family and have always taken care of each other in times of hardship. Our military firefighters must believe in our commitment to them and their families as they fulfill their military obligations. I am profoundly humbled to be associated with such dedicated individuals who serve the citizens of our County and protect our freedom. I would like to thank Colonel Jean Hulet for her nomination and Mr. Craig Oldershaw, President of Local 1563, for his willingness to partner with us in this extraordinary effort."
