Mayor Critical Of P.G. Review In Dog Shooting

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WJZ) ― A drug investigation gone wrong ended in the death of two dogs owned by the mayor of Berwyn Heights, Md.

Mike Schuh reports the mayor has filed a formal complaint, but the department is saying it did nothing wrong.

At the end of July, police working with FedEx intercepted 32 pounds of marijuana.

A cop dressed as a FedEx deliveryman brought the package to the addressee, the wife of the mayor of Berwyn Heights.

Mayor Cheye Calvo brought the package into his home. A sheriff's department SWAT team broke into the  mayor's home without showing the search warrant.

They then handcuffed Mayor Calvo and his mother-in-law. In the process, his startled dogs were both shot dead.

The problem remains that neither Mayor Calvo nor his wife knew about the dope, and later police arrested a FedEx employee who was using the names and addresses of innocent people to ship dope.

"The guys did what they were supposed to do," said Sheriff Michael Jackson. "They had a legitimate court order to be there, unfortunately, we had to engage the animals, but that engagement was justified."

"It's outrageous but not surprising," said Mayor Calvo.

Mayor Calvo says he doesn't trust the internal review and he doubts their investigation because no one has talked to him or his mother-in-law, the only non-police personnel there at the time of the incident.

There is no timetable for the completion of any of the investigations.
