The House of Delegates voted 102-31 Thursday to set aside $50 million a year in a trust fund to help clean up the polluted Chesapeake Bay.
The measure would direct money from taxes on gas and car rentals into the fund. The Senate has not yet passed a bill, but has agreed to set up a fund using money from Program Open Space, which is a land preservation program, and a tax on car titling.
The money would be aimed at helping Maryland meet 2010 restoration goals set by a federal agreement among several states in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
The trust fund would be divided among state agencies that work to improve the bay's water quality.
Republicans argued against the measure, saying lawmakers convened for a special session to solve the state's $1.7 billion structural deficit, not approve new initiatives that cost money.
