Congressman Visits Bay To Talk About Funding Cuts

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ― A federal spending bill recently signed into law will cut some programs for the Chesapeake Bay, and a Maryland congressman is in Annapolis Monday to talk about plans to increase funding next year.

Dutch Ruppersberger is headed to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation headquarters to talk about the spending bill. He'll tout the $10 million that was included in the bill -- and he'll talk strategy with environmentalists about restoring some of the cuts in 2009.

The cuts included money for low-interest loans for sewer-treatment plant upgrades. That fund was cut by 23 percent, to about $151 million across the watershed.

Environmental groups hope Congress adds money to a watershed conservation fund later this year to soften the blow. They're also waiting for an agreement on a Farm Bill to settle how much the region will receive to reduce pollution runoff from agriculture.
