State Officials Warn Of Check Scam

BALTIMORE (AP) ―

The State Treasurer's Office is warning people to watch out for a scam that involves checks that look like they were issued by the state government.

Officials say potential victims receive a check in the mail with a letter from a fake company usually with a Canadian address. The letter claims that the recipient has been selected to participate in a "secret shopper" program or has won a lottery and asks the recipient to cash the check and wire part of the proceeds to the perpetrators.

But officials say the checks are not genuine and victims are charged bank fees when the checks bounce.
