Maryland is among the first in the nation to launch its 2010 census drive. Governor O'Malley made it official in Baltimore County Wednesday.
As
political reporter Pat Warren explains, it appears there's no over-stressing the importance of the count.
State and local governments are determined not to miss anyone in the upcoming national head count. It means about $1,000 a head in federal funding.
"We probably will [fill it out]" said one person.
"It will only have 10 questions," said Governor O'Malley. "When's the last time you filled out a questionnaire with only 10 questions?"
You'll be asked how many people live with you, what kind of dwelling--such as a house or an apartment--and who owns it. You'll be asked the age and sex of everyone living in the home, along with race and origin.
"I probably won't fill it out," said one person.
And that's where the work is cut out for them.
But will they buy it in Baltimore?
"It's always a challenge," Governor Martin O'Malley said.
Many of the people gathered for this kick-off in Randallstown Wednesday will make it a personal crusade to reach out.
"We should send firefighters around because everyone opens their door for firefighters," O'Malley said.
The forms will be mailed in March.
