Small Plane Crashes In Cecil County

CECIL COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) ― A shocking scene as a plane crashes just feet from a home in Cecil County.  Kelly McPherson explains how a near disaster was avoided.

When trouble hit, two experienced pilots tried to land in a field but ended up in someone's front yard.

"You don't really hear of planes crashing into someone's yard, especially when no one gets hurt," said Jason Neff.

There were no injuries for the plane owner or the pilot.

"I think they're lucky 'cause honestly, that thing weighs, like, 1,200 pounds, and something like that falling out of the sky, you'd think there'd be more damage," said Kyle Brittingham.

The two Maryland men were flying back to Harford County after having lunch on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.  Over the phone, the owner said the engine quit while over the Susquehanna River, so they headed toward Cecil County.  The pilot told a neighbor he was switching to his secondary fuel tank while over the field.  When he couldn't do it and ran out of gas, he landed in the middle of the road and slammed into a tree.

"It sounded like a truck running through a bunch of trees," said Rock Akers.

The plane's owner lives in Owings Mills.  He says he and his friend have been flying planes for years.  Both of them got out of the crash without a scratch.

The owner has to meet with the FAA Thursday to discuss what happened.
