It's one of the most successful shows in Broadway history. When "Cats" opens Tuesday night in Baltimore, a local actor will be one of the stars.
Ron Matz reports Jonathan Burke's talent was recognized early on by one of his teachers in middle school.
The trailers are moving "Cats" into place at the Hippodrome Theatre. "Cats" is the second-longest running show in Broadway history and it has arrived in Baltimore.
When it opens, Baltimorean Jonathan Burke, 23, will be on stage.
"I couldn't imagine doing anything else. This is what I love. It's my passion. I will do it forever if I can," said Burke. After graduating from the Baltimore School for the Arts, Jonathan got the "Cats" job before he graduated from Ithaca College last year. "I had auditioned for this before I graduated and I actually got this job before I graduated," said Burke. For Burke, musical theater started in junior high school, sixth grade at the Cardinal Shehan School. "He was in the drama department. He also starred in the performances and I knew he had the talent. I talked to his mom and said we have to push this," said Kenyatta Hardison, music teacher at Cardinal Shehan. "They [my family] love it, they're all so excited and proud and waiting to see the show. They can't wait," said Burke. There's lots of pride at Cardinal Shehan, too. "I'm excited. I just can't wait to see him on the stage. I'm glad others are noticing his great talent," said Hardison. Jonathan is one of eight children. His parents and grandparents live in Baltimore. "Cats" opens Tuesday night at the Hippodrome and continues through March 29.
Jonathan's glad she did. He's now starring as Mungo Jerrie.
His friends and family will be front and center.
