Catholic Relief, Hopkins To Fight Malaria Globally

BALTIMORE (AP) ― Catholic Relief Services and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health are joining forces to battle malaria worldwide with the help of a $100 million federal grant.

Under the five-year grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development, the two institutions will promote the use of long-lasting, insecticide-treated bed nets to prevent malaria, which afflicts more than 650 million each year.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the disease kills more than a million each year, mostly young children in sub-Saharan Africa.

Catholic Relief, which has operations worldwide, will help distribute and ensure proper use of the nets.

The Hopkins school is home to a malaria research institute and the Global Program on Malaria.
